I only once had the fortune to kill one, and it was deemed quite an exploit. It happened in this wise. I was shooting pheasants in the upper portion of the Shangmoon VaUey, and my luck had been anything but gratifying. The heat was oppressive, owing to the circulation of air being shut out by the numerous mountain ridges, and I had begun to fabricate excuses for discontinuing my unprofitable business, consoling myself with the idea that I could make up in the afternoon for the lost morning hour.... When about to retrace my steps to the joss-house, where I had left my attendants, with instructions to prepare breakfast, I observed a crowd of Celestials, with banners flying and other insignia of pomp, descending an opposite declivity.
From what I knew of the manners of this strange people, I concluded it was a funeral party, and silently watched their grotesque proceedings. On they advanced, making the rocks reverberate with their disjointed bowlings. A deer was unkennelled by their approach, and made direct for my resting-place.
