What reading level is Afoot And Afloat in Burma book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
There was a tree of this kind near one house we lived in, and 80 Afoot and Afloat Through Burma from the branches swung two or three birds' nests shaped like bottles. All these logs are sent down the river and must be handled by the men. They become very expert in walking and running about on the rolling, turning, slipping logs. Gen- erally the weight of a man walking on it pushes a log under the water, but that does not seem to worry the men at all. Most of them are barefooted. The men catch t...he single logs in midstream. When one is seen approaching, two men will go out in a canoe and paddle alongside, and when they reach it, one of them will step onto it, and guide it to the shore with his paddle. All the time the log is rolling and twisting under him; but he is quite used to that, and keeps his balance without any trouble. Sometimes I have had to cross a narrow stream on a bridge which was nothing more than a heavy log floating on the water, and loosely tied at either end to the banks.
