This severe loss was principally owing to the skill and bravery of Commodore Barney, of the American navy, who, with a party of sailors, and two heavy guns, planted on the opposite height commanding the village, swept the bridge with grape. The American militia stand accused of not doing their duty on this eventful day, and thereby abandoning the capital to its fate ; be this as it may, however, it is agreed on all hands that the British com mander caused a needless waste of life in forcing a p...assage of the river at Bladensburgh, when an unprotected ford was not far distant. The gallant Barney was wounded and taken prisoner, but afterwards exchanged for an English officer of rank who had met with a similar fate. In consequence of the subse quent precipitate retreat of the British, their unfortunate wounded could not be removed ; but it gave us pleasure to hear, from the best authority, that they all experienced the most humane and generous treatment from the enemy, who, in this and other instances, " proved, that they warred more with the go vernment of England, than with the people.
