New York Bay, which is unequalled in the western hemisphere, and unsurpassed throughout the world, spreads to the southward before the city of New York, and is nine miles long, and four wide. It is formed by the confluence of East and Hudson Rivers, and is studded with several small islands, of which Governor's Island is the principal.
