...ble. 7 The ordinary statement in the bill of lading that the goods received are in "apparent good order and condition" relates merely to the outside of the packages; it does not bind the shipowner as to matters of which his servants could not have knowledge. 8 The above rules have recently been altered by statute 9 by making the carrier liable on bills of lading issued by its agents although no goods have in fact been received or a less quantity received than the amount stated in the bill of lading, the carrier, however, still retaining the right to insert a "shipper's weight, load and count" clause, when the goods are in fact loaded by the shipper.
