He delivered a number of public discourses of considerable merit. The best of them were a eulogy on Daniel Webster and an oration On the Dangers and Duties of the Mercantile Profession. His best work was Six Months in Italy (1853). He was the editor of a well-known series of Readers and the author of a life of George Ticknor.
