His 420 NATHANIEL PEABODY. perceptions were quick, his invention powerful, his reason- ing tolera])ly prompt, just and perspicuous, and his mem- ory remarkably tenacious ; hut he was most distinguished for his caustic wit and resistless ridicule. At the time when he was Speaker of the House, his influence Avas so great that by means of three or four of his associates he ruled the state ; and letters from some of the first men who flourished at that period, show the high value which was placed on his friendship. His disposition was rather hasty, yet he could bend his will to his purposes, and regulate his passions to his views. His stock of general knowledge was respecta- ble. Of national politics his views were liberal, accurate and often original.
