Duffield, chairman of the committee to find and recommend a candidate for this place, had presented to him by whom we not know the name of Rev. Henry P. Tappan, but for some reason did not present it to the board. I9O AMERICAN STATE UNIVERSITIES. Ever been held. Language was used by the Methodist members severely reflecting upon the motives of the other members of the board in this action, and some of the re- gents retained ever after an unfriendly feeling toward the whole Methodist denominatio...n in Michigan, growing out of this occasion. They seemed to regard the expres- sions of a few men, in the board and out of it, at this time and subsequently, as a claim set up by the entire church which they represented, to a certain position in relation to the university. From 1848 to 1850, Rev. Elijah H. Pilcher was the only Methodist on the board of regents. He had several times intimated to regents, and to the assembled board, that there existed in his mind a plan by which the university might obtain a chancellor without much increase of expense.
