He did not, it is true, seem to care much for her, and he often teased and vexed her; but underneath his rough ways there was a warm heart, and Amy had, somehow or other, contrived to gain his good opinion. Little by little he left off his torment- ing ways towards her ; and while he pretended not to care for her say- ings and habits, he often allowed himself to be guided by them.
