But it was not till the commencement«of the 18th century, that this art began to claim the attention of men of taste and wealth in Europe The improvements which have been made in it, have been properly attributed to the natural pro- gress of art and refinement, aided by descriptions of Chinese gardens and the rich and vivid delinia- tions of natural scenery abounding in the ancient and modern poets.
