Massachusetts remembered that the active struggles of the world are conducted with effect mainly by the young. She overlooked the gray hairs, the long experience, the honorable services of some of her own officers, and with a tr-ast creditable to her magnanimity, whatever might have been the issue, went into the colony of Virginia to pick out a young man, only forty-three years of ...age, not greatly versed in the theory or the practice of war, not distin- guished for extensive acquirements of any kind, and recommended mainly by the rough toils and hardy ser- vice to which he had voluntarily exposed himself in the forests of the West, as well as by a display of the judg- ment, the firmness, and the decision which fit a man anywhere and always for command. That man was George Washington. When Massachusetts assumed the responsibility of expressing this preference, her mem- bers knew very little of the individual excepting by report.
