He enlisted also with Walker, the filibuster, and displayed rare courage and bravery in Nicaragua, but after the death of the daring leader he returned to California. He has been in the wilds for a good many years, but he had travelled much before he left England. He had visited the chief capitals of Europe, and speaks Spanish as well as English ; even a little German and French for Paris was one of his experiences.
