It was a great help to the young men to have this money, and another event came about which served them even more. Calico-printers, until the year 1831, had to pay a heavy duty on every yard of calico they printed. That year the tax was removed. Printed calicoes could therefore be sold more cheaply, the trade increased fast, and the factory at Sabden began to be busy indeed. Before long six hundred people were at work there. Sabden village grew into a town. Old Pendle Hill looked down upon a ch...anged place. Cottages sprang up on the once lonely moor. Workmen, who had more leisure than the young master who paid them their wages, spent idle hours when the mill was shut at night. Children followed the example THE FACTORY AND THE SCHOOL-HOUSE. 47 of their fathers and played about the village road and quarrelled by the side of the stream and round the old abbey gates, because they had nothing to do. There was no school in Sabden, and the truth of the old saying was proved in the little town that " Satan finds some mischief still for idle hands to do/' Was Richard Cobden content to turn that sweet corner of the earth into a place of sin and misery that he might become rich ?
