It is abfolutely nccefiary to ftate, that thefe unjuft a6ts of 1469 and 1474 have been fo de- tefted by the people, and fo much refifted in practice, that they have never been completely executed in any one place : in many of the ^ burghs the burgeffes continued for a long period to cleft their own magiftrates, and fevcral char- ters have been granted as low down as the end of the laft century, conferring rhe right of elec- tion on the burgefles.
