By the present instance, we perceive that such transfers were not confined to the age of the reformation. With the general appearance of this Abbey in its original state, we have nothing to do, for we can now only speak, or judge of it 168 ST. MARY'S ABBEY. from the simple fragment which has survived the ruin of the greater part of the pile to which it be- longed.
