It is far more probable that the omissions in the births should have been much greater than at present, and greater than in the deaths ; and this is further confirmed by the observation before alluded to, that in the first half of the century the increase of popu- lation, as calculated from the births, is much greater than is war- ranted by the proportion of births to deaths.
