41. This Turstine being a weak, but withal a busy, prodigal person, shamefully wasted the revenues of the Abbey, and altered several of the ancient statutes and customs of the house.
Amongst other things he compelled his monks to lay aside the old Gregorian song, used in that Monastery time out of mind, and imposed upon them a new sort of church song, invented by one William Fiscamp, a Norman. , He pincht themi in their diet ; and, in a word, so tyrannized over the poor mcfnks, that they refused to submit to many of his innovations.
