In matters of law, however, an extension was admitted by way of privilege, when the usual method of computation involved penalty or forfeiture — see DeMorgan'a Comp. Aim. cited in Lewis on Obs. and Reas. in Politics, 1, 387n, — and the departures now established from the general rule are numerous. The following rules on this subject are laid down in a work of authority : — When an Act or order gives a certain number of clear days to do an act, the time is always reckoned exclusive of both the first and last days.
