In normal times mackerel, straight out of the sea, can be had almost for the asking at the height of the season in Rye Bay, and no fish, as every one is or should be aware, so well repays a quick transfer from the nets to the pot, or so suffers from undue delay.
At Jury's Gap all passage along the shore, save on foot, comes to an end. For soon after this begins that great project- ing wilderness of ever gathering shingle which cranes away out to Dungeness Point, where it drops so abruptly into deep water that a good-sized ship can skirt it, as the saying goes, within ' biscuit throw.
