To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The word was given when the enemy were within eight rods. The artillery had already made a lane through the column, and now the fowling- pieces mowed down their victims, especially the officers, with fearful celerity. The strong lungs of Major Mc- Clary raised the voice of encouragement above the roar of the cannon. The assailants were compelled to retreat, leaving behind them heaps of the fallen, while some of the flying even hurried to their boats. Their artillery had stopped in the slough am...ong the brick-kilns, and could do but little. The regulars did not take aim, and their shot passed high over the heads of the Americans. The trees around were afterwards observed with their trunks unscathed, while their branches were riddled through and through. The passionate shout of victory again rang through the American lines, and even the coward was nerved to daring. Now it was that our troops and our cause suffered from the want of discipline, and from the confusion apparent in the whole management of the action, originating in the hasty and imperfect preparation, and in their ignorance of the purposes of the enemy.
