Consequently the wages of each class have hitherto been regulated by the increase of its own population rather than of the general popula- tion of the country. Increased facilities of educa- tion, without any check to population, will probably tend to lower the wages of those just above the grade of labourers. This also applies sometimes to the clerical pro- fession, and provides the reason why those trades are generally the worst paid in which the wife and children of the artisan aid in the work.
