On the other hand, simultaneous stimulation of the cord from two sources will sometimes result in augmentation of a reflex. If a strong voluntary movement is made simulta- neously with a sensory stimulation, the response from the latter is often increased. This result is explained by sup- posing that the impulses originating in the brain and destined for a definite set of neurons in the spinal cord, overflow, as it were, from their customary channels and exert an influence on the entire cord, w...ith the effect of increasing its irritabil- ity. This phenomenon, taken in connection with that in which stimulation from two sources inhibits activity, evi- dences a fact of importance on the physiological side- namely, that the activity of any part of the cord may have the effect either of increasing or decreasing the irritability of the cord as a whole. It is also a further indication of the intimate relation existing between all parts of the motor apparatus.
Eefiex (responses are greatly affected by changes in the irritability of the nerve-centers, being increased or decreased by whatever increases or decreases this property.
