Aer- ssen and Joachimi had English public opinion with them, and a treaty for a defe...nsive alliance between the two countries was signed on June 15. By this treaty James allowed an additional force of 6, 000 men to be raised in England, the pay to be at his charges, the States undertaking to refund the amount advanced on the conclusion of a peace or truce. So quickly was the enlistment carried out, that four regiments of 1, 500 men each, commanded by the Earls of Oxford, Essex, and Southampton and Lord Willoughby de Eresby, landed in Holland ready for service on July 23. The contingent arrived at an opportune moment, as Spinola had just invaded Dutch Brabant at the head of an army of 24, 000 foot and 3, 000 horse, and had laid siege to Breda.
