Every thing considered, the citizens fared better than could have been expected, and though it was extremely disagreeable in many places, on account of the dirt, yet the city was healthy. The enemy appeared to have a great deal of shipping in the Delaware ; I counted sixty vessels, that looked of large size, nnoored so close to each other, that it seemed as if you could not pass a hand between them, near to where the navy yard now is — and all the wharves and places seemed crowded.
