Highly ornamental, half-hardy biennials, grown for the sake of their low- growing, spiny foliage, which makes a good edging for flower beds. Their flowers, being of little value, should be stopped.

Seed may be sown ^ in. Deep in light sandy soil in temp. 65 in February. But the best results are obtained by sowing in August or September in the open ground, putting the seedlings in pots, wintering them in a frame, and planting out at the end of May. They should be given a warm position and watered sparingly.
