Xew Jersey, Jan. 1, 1S4T. j Adjutaxt-Gexekal's Office, Trextox The Adjutant-General of Xew Jersey, has the honor to report to your Excellency : That under the present law. and from the want of an efficient organization of the militia of the state, no regular returns have Ijeen made to this office for sometime past, by reason of which, it is wholly out of his power to report to your Excellency, or the Department of War, the niunber an...d efficiency of the state troops.
The result i this delinquency may be, not only to deprive Xew Jersey of her just proportion of military supplies, but must have a tendency to weaken the resect heretofore felt for the valor and patriotism of her j^eople.
I would, therefore, most respectfully suggest for your con- sideration, whether this state of things does not call for some recommendation or remedy. I would, also, especially lay before your Excellency, the claims of that useful 1x)dy of men — the volunteers of Xew Jersey, who have been, and may l^ again?
