He told me the old range at "8ummerest," about one and a half or two miles from camp, had been selected. We im- mediately went, and after viewing the place, we found the old pit nearly filled up with sand and in the midst of a pond of water, to remove which would require the cutting of a ditch from two to four feet deep and about one hundred yards long. The front and rear embank- ments were nearl}- washed down. W^e found the range groAvn up in bushes, briars and old-field pines, many of which w...ere more than a foot in diameter, while the ground was literally paved with prickly pears. A glancfe was sufticient to show that it would require a vast deal of work and the expenditure of several hundred dollars to put the range in proper condition for use. There be- ing no certainty that another encampment would be held there soon, if ever, it was decided to attempt only a tem- porary arrangement. Scarcity of hands and extremely wet weather greatly retarded the work. However, just before the Third Regiment's tour of duty closed, we had three targets in position, and the Governor and his staff and a portion of the Third Regiment had a little rifle practice, which appeared to be right much enjoyed.
