In order to make satisfactory progress, schools should be taught at least forty weeks in the year, and if possible the same teacher should be retained term after term. It will be seen from the tables that the average length of our schools, the past year, has been only twenty- nine weeks, or including the subscription schools, only thirty-one weeks.
This ought not so to be, and if we wish to provide any education at all for our children, let us aim to be thorough and systematic in what we undert...ake. It is " a little learning that is a dangerous thing." Half- educated men and women are liable to become credulous dupes, crack- brained fanatics, or Jacks-of-all-trades, though good at none. Your Committee can see no necessity for many of the frequent changes now made. The advantages of retaining a tried and efficient teacher are obvious, and frequent changes are disheartening to the teacher, as well as injurious to the scholar.
