Before I left Richmond, I gave my attention to the platting of the survey, and to the location and estimates... of the continu- ation of the canal along the margin of James river: it was with much regret that I found it out of my power to lay this work l)efore you during the session of last year, but there was not sufficient time to complete it with that degree of care and ac- curacy which previous circumstances, as well as the impor- tance of the subject recommended in its investigation, and' with such perspicuity as would enable others to understand readily my plans and calculations in all their details, and to compare with ease any part of them with the field notes.
