The town of Newton being situated on a spur of the main I U ! ridge dividing tlic great Catawba from the South Fork, its pe- culiar location being about one mile distant from the Beaty's Ford ridge, which is crossed on the East, and 4000 feet distant from Smoyer's mill creek on the West ; and the relative ele- vations of these points being respectively, 1025, 1021 and 886 feet above tide, the line necessarily must pass Newton on the maximum grade, bv cutting 23 feet in the ridge and filling 70 ...feeC at Smyer's mill creek. And thence across the ridge between the last named creek and Clark's creek, it ascends to the Crowder town ridge, another spur of the main ridge which separates the South Fork from its tributary, Clark's creek. And here for about 1800 feet a 5 degree curve is used, the first and only instance on the line where it is necessary. Thence the crest of this ridge is followed to its junction with the main ridge near Hale's, and the same from which the line departed at Longcriers.
