Fire activity was high during the first several weeks of the 2005 fire season, with red-flag conditions issued by the National Weather Service a...nd extreme fire danger in the southern and central portions of the state. This period of increased initial attack activity prompted a 5-day ban on open burmng, the first such ban in several years. Despite the dry conditions, the state's largest wildland fire was contained at 29 acres. Our statewide system of fire lookout towers is credited with keeping the fires small and saving several structures this season due to their quick and accurate spotting capabilities.
