The largest percentage increase in the School District Bud- get for 1953-1954 is reflected in the teacher salary item. Our hot lunch programs have become an integral part of the total school program. We are serving well-balanced, nutri- tious lunches to approximately sixty per cent of our school chil- dren. It would not be possible to serve these lunches for twenty or twenty-five cents were it not for the assistance from Federal sources in the form of surplus foods and a direct subsidy of six c...ents per meal. The importance of this program can be directly related to the health of our children and youth - its continuance will re- quire the School District to pay the salaries of our cafeteria per- sonnel. State and national recognition of the worth and ability of one of our teachers of Bartlett was no surprise to us who have worked with Mrs. Bertha James. We are proud of her contri- butions to our local educational program and of the high honor bestowed on her as the new President of the New Hampshire Classroom Teachers' Association.
