Stuart Heard, a member of the Department for over 60 years, passed away in Autumn. Stuart was a devoted member and our last link to the great fire that destroyed the lower village in the 1930's. Each town has a Forest Fire Warden and several Deputy Wardens who assist the Forest Rangers with forest fire suppression, prevention, and law enforcement. The number of fires reported during the 2000 fire season was below average as referenced in the statistics below. Despite this, our network of fire towers and detection patrols were still quite busy with the fire towers being first to report over 135 fires. These fires were quickly and accurately reported to the local fire department for their prompt and effective suppression efforts.
