The maintenance of such a permanent spark forms the essential part of electric lighting by those lamps known as an-c lamps. Production of an Arc. The first permanent spark was produced by Sir Humphry Davy in 1810. He connected two sticks of wood charcoal to the terminals of a big series battery of some 2000 primary cells, the e.m.f. of which was between 2000 and 3000 volts. The charcoal sticks, arranged horizontally, were gradually brought nearer to one another endways, and when they were about... :^th of an inch apart a spark jumped across the intervening space. The spark was not momentary however — it apparently developed into a continuous and intensely luminous flame. Moreover when the charcoal sticks were moved further apart this flame con- tinued to play until a space of over an inch separated the ends of the carbons. The flame naturally formed an arch — hence the name arc which is given to this source of light. p. T. 9 130 APPLIED ELECTRICITY It was found that once the arc had gone out it could not be restarted unless the carbons were brought close together again.
