Lecomte stayed behind to look after the workmen I began by taking some observations with the compass, with a view to determining the position of north and north-west, south and south-west, from our inscription. From another standpoint, a few yards north of the inscription, I noted : — •j']^ on the axis of the guardhouse of Kubab, and 1 18|-° on the wely of Sheikh Mo'alla (?) near 'Amwas. * Shortly afterwards, I went to M. Bergheim's farmhouse and tested my results in the other direction, noting, from the south-east corner of that building, an angle of 9i|° with our tent, which was visible from there.
