Como era necesario un consultor que se encargara de la seleccion de los libros que se habian de comprar, el sefior Huntington dio el afio siguien- te otra donacion para establecer una catedra de Literatura Hispanica en la Biblioteca del Congreso.
Esta catedra estuvo a cargo, durante dos afios, del ex-embajador de Espafia en los Estados Unidos, D. Juan Riafio y Gayangos. El sefior Riafio, como el mismo me informo mas tarde, acepto el puesto por su anti- gua amistad con Huntington, pues ademas de... no estar muy enterado de los publicaciones de Espafia y Portugal, se encontraba ya viejo y achacoso y mas pensaba en vivir tranquilo preparandosc para el *Gran Viaje' que no meterse en relaciones con libreros, editores y autores, todo lo cual requeria mucha actividad, paciencia y entusiasmo.
El afio 1931 fui llamado a ocupar esta catedra con el nombre de Con- sultor en Literatura Hispanica, debido a la recomendacion que de mi per- sona hizo Riafio a Huntington, junto con las excelentes referencias que de CK 35 jSi^ mi dio mi gran amigo Cecil Knight Jones, destacado miembro de la Biblio- teca, al Dr.
