In the bottoming room, as it is called, where the shoe is lasted, the sole and heel put on, trimmed and finished, mostly by men operatives, though there were quite a number of women and boys, the average pay of every individual was $2 a day.
Now, the result of this machinery in that business is, that the shoes are made with more regularity and better sewing. The operative has had his wages doub...led, and the hours of labor have been shortened; while the shoe is sold to the public, in the face of the 50 per cent, in- crease in the cost of material, at $1.50, instead of $2.25. as formerly.
And if the work had to be done by hand, in the old way, and the oper- atives receive their present rate of wages, the shoe would cost at least $1.75 more than now. There are 45,000,000 sewed boots and shoes sold in a year ; and you can easily see the gain. I do not mean to say they are sold to consumers for that price, in either case, as there i&i an addi- tion, probably, of 75 cents on each pair, before they reach the foot of the wearer.
