Man's victories over the natural world have consisted solely in the study and utilisation of natural forces, and if we are to achieve similar victories in the moral world, it must be through a similar study and utilisation of the great moral and social forces already existing.

How has he behaved in the past, and how is he likely to beha...ve in the future ? What do we know of his family ? Will they be a help or a hindrance to the work we have in hand ? What is the influence brought to bear upon him by the church of which he is a member, and can we enlist that influence on our side ? How do matters stand with that branch of industry to which he belongs ? How about the laws which govern him ? Are they such as will coun- teract our efforts, or may we rely upon them to strengthen us ? Unless we prepare ourselves to answer questions such as these we shall act blindly and at random, and by the time we have answered all of them, we shall find our- selves in possession of a considerable amount of very useful and interesting information.
