As a ploughed field, Left desolate and bare To winter storms and chilly, frosty air, Vet only thus made dreary for awhile, That richer there the harvest grain may smile; So is the heart whose sod, Tender and green, Hath deeply been Upturned by God, Its sprouting blades laid low, Yet only broken thus by griefs ploughshare, That in its furrows He might sow The seed of righteousness, which shall in- crease Until it yield the harvest of eternal peace.
