Appearances indicative of atrophy in the mouth are not very conspicuous. In the pharynx, however, they are quite marked. The mucous membrane of the poste- rior wall of the pharynx presents pale, glistening, linear markings that reflect the light and are due to wrinkling of the attenuated mucosa. In the higher grades of atrophy the soft palate and uvula are greatly shrunken.
