I was then keeping shop in Chapman's Block, on Franklin Square, when the proclamation of freedom was proclaimed ; it sent a thrill of joy through every avenue of my soul. " It was by this sneaking, back-door arrangement, that they were smuggled surreptitiously into the service of our countrv.
