The best scholars in Greek and Latin only regarded English poetry as a medium to be rendered into Greek Iambics or Latin Lyrics ; the mathematicians, as a rule, knew and cared for nothing outside their mathematics.
As for the profession of letters, that, in any shape, was regarded with pity and contempt.
