Either on account of the Pope's sight, or some other cause, the chandelier was surrrouned by a circle of green silk, in such a manner that the face of Clement VIII could not be seen, nor could be seen either Cinzio Passero or Pietro Aldobrandino, Cardinals, nephews of the Pope, who stood behind the back of his chair.
Clement was clothed with his cope of crimson velvet trimmed with ermine, and a garment of magnificent lace ; the hood also was of crimson velvet ; the toga, stockings and shoes wer...e of white silk, and on the latter the golden cross was embroidered.
The old man with simple frankness opened his mind to the Pope in regard to the trials of the Cenci; he made manifest the uncertainty of the accusation, exposed the unlikelihood of the depositions, the youth of several q£ the accused, the facts not only discordant, but contrary to one another ; and although he added several things of his own, he repeated the observations of Beatrice; and even dared to hint at the doubtful proofs which, accord- ing to his opinion, were derived from the tortures ; since Marzio had confessed under the torture, but had also re- 256 FRANCESCO GUERRAZZI tracted his confession, and had died under it, in testimony that he had at last said the truth.
