It often leads a young scholar to regard the work of teaching as a necessary evil, to be borne only because it may enable him to pursue further the research which he loves. When this does not happen, when he really applies himseM with some zeal to his work as a teacher, it often leads to an exaggerated or at least disproportionate estimate of the educational value of his specialty, and to corre- sponding indifference to the educational value of other studies.
