What reading level is Bendigo Shafter (1979) book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

It was now only a few weeks to Christmas.
Refolding the newspaper to leave no indication it had been opened, I returned everything to the saddlebags. I took his rifle from its scabbard and went back into the house.
Morrell had been stripped to the waist and the blood washed away.
The bullet went through, Sampson said, but he's lost a lot of blood and he's in bad shape. He glanced at the saddlebags. Is there a razor in there?
Before I realized it, I said, No ... no razor.
There's something wrong
...here, Sampson said. No bed on the horse, and this man shaved not later than yesterday. That means he must have camped somewhere within a day's ride.
Morrell stirred, the first movement I'd seen him make. He stirred and muttered something.
I'll make some soup, John said, and some coffee.
He indicated the table. I found that, too.
It was a derringer, .44 caliber. A sleeve gun with a band to fasten it to the wrist. The draw from the sleeve was one of the fastest and was fancied by gambling men.
I hung my coat over a chair and when I turned back to the wounded man his eyes were open and he was looking at me.

Why does L'Amour always describe his characters as standing "wide legged" or "spraddling legged"...Did he have a fetish about crotch itch or something??? I can see that Finnerty and his pals will eventually make off with whatever valuables available, but not before one or more start bothering the young girls. .... I also think that the Indian has been expelled from his village, not sure but it seems to me so ...or he soon will. Far too contentious a person.

If the logs tapered from 18 inches to 12, then they'd have to be placed with every second one upside down as to fill out the deep V gaps which would be left if each bottom was 18". I suppose L'amour didn';t think of that, ...to engrossed in his phony philosophising about trees breathing. In those early years this was not know . Only in the 20th century did itcome to light.n

Short Bull seems to be about 14-15 so how old could his grandfather be...maybe late 50S BOT MUCH MORE. lmour afian very loos with his figuring and so calle dating. . As he says, he's astorytellwe, and not many stories are in any wat truthful, unless whatever he's copied from books.
He constantly has illiterate cowbots giving exact dates of events that happened maybe 200 years before, a gross error of writing.
