It was the beginning of a fine day. The air was clear, completely devoid of the haze which enveloped the city, to a greater or lesser extent, each evening. The sky was white where the pale sun burned, still fairly low on the horizon, but, aloft, the curving vault of the heavens was a deep endless blue; traces of white puffy clouds trailed like unfurled sails here and there.
