He had lost all sense of time and felt that he was being absorbed into the timelessness of the unchanging desert itself. When at last he resumed his journey he was a little weaker than before his rest. He seemed to have the dreadful weights of a nightmare at- tached to his feet; and at times he felt that it would be easier to crawl on his hands and knees than to walk upright.
