To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The Viceroy's troops were quite daunted, and hid or fled, and he himself with his Court and chief officers (not this present Viceregent, but a precursor of his) sought refuge ignominiously in his ships, and thus saved his neck. In the meantime the people acclaimed for their leader one Alessio, an honest, well meaning fellow, with his mouth full of high talk of equity, and mercy, and reformation of wrongs ; but poor Alessio soon found, as others have, that the Throne is an uneasy seat, and the S...ceptre a heavy instrument for a weak, unused hand to bear. For all his talk of justice and mercy, he began his reign by hanging a brother insurgent ringleader who he fancied was creeping too near his throne, with a mind to oust himself. Then he went on from bad to worse; ruling too mercifully for some, too hardly for others, letting some of his followers get too rich, and keeping others too poor. He increased his enemies daily, and his friends not at all, was wrongly accused of treachery by the first, and coldly defended by the last ; insomuch that after a few weeks of wretched rule, in a rising of his new subjects the unhappy Alessio was by them torn Beyond the Seas.
