One day God bade him go to Ninive and preach penance, for the sins of the people had become very great Ninive was the capital of Assyria, and Jonas wished it to perish. Hence he fled to the sea, and embarked aboard a vessel going to Tharsis, thinking he would thus flee from the Lord.
2. When the ship had pushed out from the land God sent a violent storm, so that the vessel was in danger of being lost.
