They that bless thee shall be blessed, And they that cur...se thee shall be cursed.'* And in spite of Balak 's great anger and indigna- tion, Balaam did not end his speech here; but lifting up his voice again, he foretold the future of Israel in these words : '* There steppeth forth a star out of Jacob, And there riseth a scepter out of Israel.*' Whether by these words, star or scepter, is meant King David, who conquered the Moabites and Edomites, we cannot say; but there is much reason to believe that it is so (II Samuel viii. 2).
